Lagavulin 9 y/o - GOT House Lannister - 46%
Photo taken somewhere in Stuttgart
Yes we are late, we know. The whole whisky community is already busy posting proudly like thousands of pictures or being upset about Diageo "selling their soul to the film industry" and yelling "where are the good old times". From our point of view we thankfully see a fresh 9 year old Lagavulin with a reasonable abv and a little overcharged pricetag. But what does overpriced mean nowadays?
Nose
First time we smell apples at Lagavulin! The slight fruitiness is enriched by pears and the mandatory Laga-lemons (where is the patent attorney? The should really name a species after it). We also find hazelnutcreme, new paper, wet bread, green olives and seabuckthorn. What's really lovely is the freshness and the perfectly integrated smokiness. The bouquet is completely different than the one from the regular 16 years old, not that rich, but cleaner, more gentle and balanced.
Palate
Bitter lemon juice on new leather, with almond cream and marzipan and a delicious sweetness. Matcha and green tea which were brewed too long. Behind all this a rich cereal, barley note.
Finish
Medium and slightly bitter. It's like the aftertaste after eating too much Mozart balls.
Rating
Beside of the picturesque packaging, we attest this patient a beautiful aroma, delicious taste and an astonishing maturity for it's young age. We tend to say it's way more balanced than their 8 year old expression. The finish wasn't really overwhelming, but no familly is perfect right?
