Port Mourant 1989 - Distilia - Greenheart - 47,3%
Pictire taken in a house in Stuttgart
1989 is one of the PM Vintages with an excellent overall reputation, such as 1994 from Versailles. It's hard to find bad ones honestly. Maybe the last Rum Artesanal 1989 could be an weaker example, which in our opinion had a slight off note from the cask. The Silver Seal 1989 is our Benchmark so far. Let's see how this Greenheart from Distillia is standing its ground.
Nose
Sweet mangoes, raisins and marcipan. What?! It actually feels like an old Baraillon Armagnac at the first encounter. The most uncommon PM 89 Nose we've had till date. And the most fruity one. Banana bread, milk chocolade and apricots. Tons of apricots. Splendid! There is also a slight floral side, that strokes your senses with Ylang Ylang and jasmine blossoms. Plus some hints of fine wood oil. Let's feast, shall we?
Palate
Smooth and gentle, rounded and sweet. No this ain't no lullaby, but a 31 years old rum with 47,3%. The alcohol is almost invisible. We find the sweetness of the apricots and a pleasant bitterness of grapemark. Oh, and there is honey too. But rather an exotic one, than the one's we know from our climes. In keeping with the late Roman decadence in which we live today, this rum would be an ideal digestif after a heavy meal.
Finish
Medium long, with cocoa, apricot jam and grapemark. Somehow we can't get rid of that Brandy feeling with this fellow.
Rating
Quite unusual, very entertaining and dangerously sippable Armagn...pardon...Port Mourant ladies and gents. Elegant and super juicy.
Would be super interesting to compare all 1989 in a blind tasting, but unfortunately we ran out of samples (right, think of it as a call for donations). Thanks to Distillia for providing us with a sample!
First time on this blog that a vintage nails the rating by the way.
