Enmore Mec 1992 - 27 y/o - Flensburg Rum Company - 59,8%

Rum

Picture taken somewhere in Stuttgart

The MEC mark represents a rum style, distilled on the Versailles Still at the lost Guyanese Enmore Distillery. The design of the bottle and label somehow reminds us of some old fashioned German Kellerbier. Nothing wrong with Kellerbier, but not sure if this was the intention of the bottler. Maybe it continentally aged in a cellar? At the end of the day only content matters, right?

Nose

EHP with trumpets! What?! In terms of smell this is much closer to rums from the Enmore Coffey Still instead of the Versailles still. Meaning: Lots of pencil shavings, but fried in coconut butter and fresh paint, together with manioc, green bananas, yarrow, fresh cut sugarcane and earthy roots, creating a feverish jungle vibe (caution, we're not talking about a crazy and bright jamaican funkiness). It's not on a level with the legendary 60's or 70's Port Mourants, but one can receive an immersive impression of the deep and earthy darkness that only rums from Demerara can create. Mainly the ones that dripped out of the three only existing Greenheart wood stills.

Palate

Impressive how smooth and balanced it is, considering the high strength. So rounded, dark and herbal, with a strong but not predominant espresso and grain coffee bitterness. Some dried Prunes and dates and smokes anchovies are also part of the delegation. The body is super heavy (which brings us back to the Versailles single pot still) and tastes almost tropically matured. It's not really complex, but very oily and pointed.

Finish

Ciao ragazza! We feel like we've had a long and satisfying visit to a cozy italian coffee shop, with cocoa, cantuccini and crushed coffee beans all over the place. We like that finish a lot!

Rating

Laurell Hamillton once said, 'I'd never met coffee that wasn't wonderful. It was just a matter of HOW wonderful it was'. Same applies to this fellow. It's not some super premium ethiopian Limu Coffee, but still a very tasty wooden Demerara coffee/chocolate experience. To be honest, we prefer this over the extremely sought after KFM Release, that had too much bitterness in our book. Grazie to Kirsch Import - House of Spirits for the sample!
