Mackmyra Vinterrök - 46,1%
Photo taken somewhere in Stuttgart
Founded around 1998 by a couple of members of the swedish Royal Institute of Technology on a ski trip, this rather young whisky distillery is nowadays quite known for several cask experiments. For this bottling they mixed a seven to 8 years old casks of their own recipe with lightly peated malt that was partly matured in beer casks.
Nose
The first impression is: cold cigarette ashtray with fresh oxygen. Then we get sweeter notes of forest honey and some heather. With time it becomes sweeter and sour, almost sticky with a lot of vanilla, plus wet wooden planks and fermented pears. There is also a slight salinity.
Palate
Very sweet entreance with an oily texture, warming the whole mouth. It's like liquid honey, spiced with heather, vanillin sugar and a few drops of lemon juice. It's also a bit sharp, not sure if it's the youth or the distillery character.
Finish
Medium long with a slight bitterness of old grapefruit peels and a bit of that ashtray again. Actually, a very nice finish.

Most of the Mack’s we have had to date, haven’t really impressed us that much. With this being a really nice spirit driven dram, we slowly get more comfortable with this brand. It's not uber-complex and challenging, but somehow it reminds us a little of some NAS Taliskers, which can be seen as a subtile compliment.
